Clyde automaton: X’d 4 U

Previously a producer of trippy lo-fi hip-hop instrumentals, Clyde automaton has switched to jungle and hardcore revivalism, and it’s abundantly clear that this territory was one of his first loves. X’d 4 U is his fourth EP in this vein, with the first two appearing on the the excellent DOMEOFDOOM label. It’s super focused and deadly, with style ranging from the ragga blitz “NEVER DIE [AGAIN]” to the heavy breakbeat roller “NETTO AMEN [packet mash]”. “TRASHED SON [freezrr]” is also a stone cold rave slammer which surfs over a tidal wave of bass. Only 4 tracks, but he’s putting out EPs so frequently that it hopefully won’t be long before his next release, because this rules.

I’m not sure why but I’ve been looking back lately (probably because I’m stuck at home and can’t go anywhere) and I ended up making playlists of some of my favorite songs of the past 2 decades. I’ll keep adding to them as I think of more things:

Best of the 2000s
Best of the 2010s
And these are just various songs/pieces that pop up in my head from time to time, regardless of era. I’ll warn you that it ended up skewing towards silly/goofy stuff after a while:

I try to avoid jumping on the bandwagon with these types of posts but for some reason I’m caving in this time. Here are ten albums that re-programmed my brain by the time I started college. Pretty much all of these were introduced to me by WPKN, college radio, or CMJ New Music Monthly.
Future Sound of London: ISDN
Orbital: In Sides
Aphex Twin: Richard D James Album
µ-ziq: Lunatic Harness
Alec Empire: The Destroyer
Stereolab: Dots & Loops
Guided By Voices: Alien Lanes
Dr. Octagon
Sun Ra: Space Is The Place
Quasimoto: The Unseen
This is leaving off a lot of “obvious” (but still valid) choices like Moby, Beck, Björk, Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Daft Punk, Pixies, Massive Attack, Tricky, Radiohead, etc.

Taking it further, here’s 10 college albums:
His Name Is Alive: Someday My Blues Will Cover The Earth (really all of them, but this is where I started)
Cocteau Twins: Heaven Or Las Vegas
Brian Eno: Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks
Venetian Snares: Higgins Ultra Low Track…
Duran Duran Duran: cdr he sent me in 2002
Longmont Potion Castle: Best Of
Alice Coltrane: Journey In Satchidananda
Coil: Musick To Play In The Dark Vol. 1
Negativland: Escape From Noise
People Like Us: Abridged Too Far
